Devotions/Bible Studies
Awaken – Priscilla Shirer
I’ve been working through this devotional slowly and steadily. I do it intermittently between other reading and devotionals, but almost always Priscilla hits it on the head. I feel like almost every day was written for me. It includes a two page devotional and then a two page spread to answer a question, write a prayer, journal your thoughts. Love it!
New Morning Mercies – Paul David Tripp
I just got this for Christmas, and I’m loving it so far! The devotions aren’t super long, but they are deep and insightful and suggest additional passages of Scripture for further reading.
The Chronological Study Bible
Totally a favorite! Reading through the Bible chronologically taught me so many new things, and I love studying the history and timelines. This Bible provides timelines, time capsules, historical information, maps, and more. It’s a great way to explore God’s Word in a new light.
Becoming MomStrong
The absolute BEST Bible Study I’ve done. I love her writing style and how she boldly encourages us as warrior moms fighting for truth against a culture where truth is all relative.
Becoming Mom Strong Bible Study
Great companion study to the book. This is one I would do again.
Spiritual Devleopment
Hands-Free Mama – Rachel Stafford
Great read with lots of practical tips and advise on putting down the devices, being present, engaging with the people around you, and developing deep relationships.
The Road Back to You – Ian Cron
Uh-mazing read! If you aren’t familiar with the Enneagram, I highly recommend you look it up. I took the $10 paid version of the Enneagram test to get accurate and detailed results, and then I read this amazing book that tells you more about each number on the Enneagram and more. It was literally like someone was inside my head as I read “my” chapter. Not only has it helped me be more aware of myself, but it has also helped me to better understand and identify with those I love.
Anxious for Nothing – Max Lucado
This one was a quick read with sound Biblical encouragement on dealing with anxiousness. The book also includes discussion questions for each chapter at the end of the book if you wanted to use for a small group or Bible study.
I Declare War – Levi Lulsko
This book was super easy to read and had lots of real, down-to-earth practical advice about changing the way we think and react and speak.
Enemies of the Heart – Andy Stanley
My husband randomly bought this book for me, and I loved it. Great insight into new ways of thinking about and getting a handle on the emotions we so often let control us.
Loving my Actual Life – Alexandra Kuykendall
Loved this book, and great one to read and put into practice for the new year. This book is written like a journal with daily entries from her personal experiment to implement practices that will help her “love her actual life” a little more – things from implementing quiet to meal planning and pursing passions. So many great tips and inspiration as well as reminders to appreciate what’s right in front of us.
Christian Fiction
Sons of Encouragement – Francine Rivers
This book tells the story of 5 men in Scripture who played ‘supporting’ roles to some more ‘famous’ characters. It includes Aaron, Caleb, Jonathan, Amos, and Silas. I actually read this in conjunction with my chronological Bible. As I was reading through the books of the Bible that told these mens’ stories I would simultaneously read the section in the book about them. While this is a fiction book, Francine Rivers tells the Biblical story of these men while filling it in with realistic details that paint a more vivid picture of these men and their lives. It brought a lot of insight into their stories and made the Scriptures come even more alive.
Lineage of Grace – Francine Rivers
Similar to Sons of Encouragement, this book is five in one and tells the story of the five women in the lineage of Jesus.
Bridge to Haven – Francine Rivers
Notice a pattern here? I love Francine Rivers for all my fiction (and semi-fiction) needs!
Chronicles of the Kings: 5 book series – Lynn Austin
This series made it into my top two book series of all time. I love some good Historical Christian Fiction and this hit the nail on the head. This series chronicles the reigns of Kings Ahaz, Hezikiah and Manasseh.
The Mark of the Lion: 3 book series – Francine Rivers
This series is the other that is in my top two of all time. In fact, I’ve read through this series twice now. It’s also a great historical Christian fiction series. This one occurs post Jesus death and resurrection in the time of Roman persecution of Christian and follows the story of some unlikely characters with bold, unwavering faith.
Kids
52-Week Bible Story Devotional.
This might be the best devotional I’ve purchased for my girls. They are currently 7 and 5 and the subject matter is age appropriate, interesting, and applicable. It’s broken into 52 devotions, each with multiple activities to do throughout the week including the devotion, a video (when you use the corresponding app), Scripture, a Christ-Connection, a to-do, and a prayer. It’s been great to focus on the same content for a full week so they can actually remember and learn to apply the lesson. I also love that the devotions don’t just simply tell the story of Adam and Eve or Noah etc… but it teaches kids how to pull out the application from their stories. My girls look forward to this every night. Definitely a winner!
Q&A a Day for Kids
I bought these for all three of my girls (even though my youngest can’t use it yet). Each page is marked with the date and then three spaces to write – one for each year on the same day. Each day/page has a question to answer. Once the book is completed your kids will have answered each questions three times – once a year for three years. You will see their answer from year to year on the same page. Questions include things like “What was your favorite thing you did today?”; “I feel angry when _______.” ; If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?” Super fun. They love it, and it’s a great conversation starter!
Journals
Q&A A Day for Moms
I bought this for myself when I bought the Q&A for the kids. It’s the same format except with “mom” questions like “What is something that made your child laugh today?” “If you could get a parenting do-over what would it be?” “When was the last time you had family visit?” etc…
Every Day – a five year memory book
Again, same format as the Q&A books, but I started this one back in 2016. So I am currently filling in my 4th year! This book doesn’t ask any questions, but is simply just a place to write down whatever you want each day whether it be a brief rundown of your day or something funny or special you want to remember. Make it your own. It’s a great option if you want to journal without feeling the need to write a book 🙂
Mr Journal & Mrs Journal
These are so fun! The one I have is actually a two-in-one (which you will see in the video), but they only sell them separately now. (I did find one of the combo ones on amazon here if you really want it, but it’s much more expensive because it’s out of print.) These are a fun way that my husband and I remember to write sweet notes back and forth to each other.
Pray it Out Journal
This. is. my. FAVORITE!!!!!!! I found Bibles and Coffee on Instagram and love all the things. This prayer journal has been amazing. It has a place to take notes from church sermons, but more than that it is place to write out a prayer to the Lord about what He is teaching you during that sermon. Then there’s a place to check it everyday and pray through what He is teaching you. There’s also a place to give yourself daily reminders of who you are, Whose you are, things you’re grateful for, and things you want to accomplish. You’ll definitely want to check out the look inside video.
Other Non-Fiction
BlackOut – Candace Owens
She writes like she speaks: eloquently, to-the-point, emphatically, knowledgeably, easy-to-follow. I felt like I was getting a history lesson, sermon, and motivational speech all at the same time. She knows her stuff, and she boldly speaks the truths others are too afraid to say.
The Patriot’s Refernce
This book is a compilation of the early writings of our country. It includes the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, letters from George Washington, writings of Ben Franklin, journal entries from Paul Revere and many many more! So interesting and enlightening.
